Hi,
I take part in dragon boat racing, which I would imagine burns a similar amount of calories to rowing. The only note of rowing I see on the exercise list is 'moderate effort, in the gym'. I put a massive amount of effort paddling on the Thames in races, for 500m and 200m and 1000m when training, what do you think the calorific (?) value of this would be?
Hi,
Try using these figures to help you decide on appropriate calorie expenditure for your training distances and intensities:
If you weight approximately 130lbs, for example, your calories per hour would equate to:
Canoeing, rowing, 6 mph, vigorous effort = 708 calories
Canoeing, rowing, crewing, competition = 708 calories
Canoeing, rowing, light effort = 177 calories
Canoeing, rowing, moderate effort = 413 calories
Rowing, stationary, light effort = 413 calories
Rowing, stationary, moderate effort = 502 calories
Rowing, stationary, very vigorous effort = 708 calories
Rowing, stationary, vigorous effort = 561 calories
If you weight approximately 190lbs, for example, your calories per hour would equate to:
Canoeing, rowing, 6 mph, vigorous effort = 1035 calories
Canoeing, rowing, crewing, competition = 1035 calories
Canoeing, rowing, light effort = 259 calories
Canoeing, rowing, moderate effort = 604 calories
Rowing, stationary, light effort = 604 calories
Rowing, stationary, moderate effort = 733 calories
Rowing, stationary, very vigorous effort = 1035 calories
Rowing, stationary, vigorous effort = 819 calories
Hope this detail helps you to judge and categorise your level of training and equivalent calorie expenditure.
