Q.

What should my calorie intake be if I'm breast-feeding?

Hi, I'm 4 stone over weight and I'm suffering with very high blood pressure. My Dr has advised me to lose weight and is very happy for me to do so! I'm breast-feeding my 9 week old child but I still need to shift weight to stabilise my blood pressure. How many calories should I be consuming, taking into account the breast-feeding?

Congratulations on your little one, and hurrah for breast-feeding because it really helps you get in shape! However I?d never recommend a breast-feeding mum to go lower than 1800 calories a day (and only with a doctor's advice), so this is the figure I?d suggest you stick to. Breast-feeding can use up to between 250-500 calories a day so you should still lose weight quite successfully. But please do try to pack as much nutrition into those 1800 calories as you can because this can be a draining time. So that's plenty of fruit and vegetables, low fat dairy products, lean meat and fish, energising carbs and not too many ?empty? calories (i.e. fatty sugary foods). And keep away from processed high salt foods which will only serve to raise your blood pressure more.
