Q.

What's the active ingredient in Cholesterol reducing yogurts

OPtifit Cholesterol yogurt drink - can you tell me what are the ingredients, does it contain some sort of human bacteria gut? Thanks

A.

Our expert says...

I'm unable to check the full ingredients list for the Optifit Cholesterol Lowering Yogurt drink as it is an Aldi only product and they do not supply their product information online. I would recommend contacting Aldi directly if you'd like this information.

With most yogurt drinks designed to help lower cholesterol, such as Benecol and Flora Proactive, the active ingredient is plant sterols or stanols which have been clinically proven to help reduce cholesterol. Plant sterols and stanols work by competing with cholesterol for absorption into the blood, meaning you take less in from your diet. Your body then has to use some of the cholesterol in your blood to make bile, so this is removed from your blood causing an overall lowering effect on your total blood cholesterol levels.

These products are recommended for people who have been clinically proven to have high cholesterol, there is no real benefit to taking these drinks if you do not have high cholesterol.

I hope this helps
