I am trying to lose about 22 lbs or so and have been struggling to do this for some time. I never know should I be eating just 3 (healthy/balanced) meals a day and that is all or should it be 3 meals and small snacks - or as some people eat (little and often)? Which is better, assuming you are having the correct no. of cals per day? I tend not to get hungry mid morning, nor particularly mid afternoon - my worst time is evening. I would like to aim to follow a pattern of eating that makes it easier for me to stick to and gets me losing weight. Thank you
Cathy
If I was to answer your question based on consensus opinion, I guess the slight scientific leaning here (when you are trying to achieve weight loss) would be to go with the various smaller meals and snacks. There are two reasons for this - one that you can burn slightly more calories this way based on the fact that there's always a certain amount of calories used up in cracking the digestive process into action (though the advantage here is tiny), and secondly - and perhaps more pertinently - that by eating more regularly you keep your blood sugar level on an even keel and theoretically don't get so hungry as to trigger a major binge. However this doesn?t take into account individual preference and the fact that for many dieters, three square meals feels like a more manageable pattern of eating. In short you should do what is right for you. If you only get hungry in the evening, then you?ll need to save more calories for then. On the other hand it maybe that if you DO establish a pattern of eating where you have a bigger breakfast and lunch you will become less inclined to feel hungry in the evenings like you do nowt. I?d suggest you play around a little bit to see what suits and then stick with what you discover. There?s no truth in the old dieting myth that food eaten in the evening ?sits? on your stomach making it more likely that you?ll turn it into fat.
