Our expert says...

Hi,

Thanks for writing in rather than struggling on your own.  It is important to try and hit your daily calorie target for a number of reasons, so let me explain why.

If you eat significantly less than 1400 calories a day on a regular basis, it will be hard to obtain all the vitamins, minerals and other nutrients that you need to keep your body healthy and for you to function efficiently and feel well.  Eating too few calories can lead to lack of energy, feeling low and mood swings, for example, and eating less than 1400 calories a day is not a sustainable level for weight loss.

However, some people do have a smaller appetite than others and you may find that eating 5 small meals a day suits you better than having 3 larger meals a day.  Even with small meals, it is important that you balance each meal by eating complex brown carbohydrates, lean protein and lots of vegetables and fruit - making sure you eat your 5-a-day.  Don’t forget to drink lots of water too!

If you can introduce this way of eating into your diet, and meet your calorie target each day, I think you will find that you feel more positive and have more energy for exercise.  And after all, exercise is the other important factor in losing weight and leading a healthy lifestyle!
