The approximate calories burned, depends very much on a person’s fitness and exercise intensity level as well as the quality of techniques performed. A workout such as the ‘Curves’ 30 minute workout is likely to burn in the range of 100-210 calories even though the ‘500 calories’ quoted on the website relates to research carried out at Baylor University on the intensity of the Curves workout.

The issue with this claim is that it is based on only 1 study and one that has not been critiqued for validity or bias. It is also worth being sceptical of American research generally because often there can be commission involved with some of the research.

The 500 calorie figure described in the research was supposedly for the exercisers of the highest fitness level as opposed to a generally achieved figure, the normal was in fact 164 calories. This further highlights the 500 figure to be unrealistic and by no means an average. If you were to follow the suggested ‘potential 500 calories burned’ figure you are likely to be overestimating ad this will skew your calorie balance equations.

So go with a figure between 100-210 calories for a 30min curves session, depending on how demanding you find it for your personal fitness level.
