Hi, I've got a set of body analyser scales. I've been using them for over 6 months and my body water content has never been higher than 52%, even though I'm drinking 2 litres of water per day. I drink tea and juice on top of that. I'm aware that my water content should be closer to 70%. I do feel dehydrated quite often. I've been tested for diabetes before, which was negative. Is there anything that you could recommend?
I don't think you should worry too much as the average water content of adult males is about 60 per cent and of adult females about 55 per cent. As your body fat percentage falls, which will happen as a result of losing weight, and particularly as you put on lean tissue, which will happen as a result of resistance exercise, your body water percentage will go up. That's because body fat is only 10 per cent water whereas lean muscle tissue is about 75 per cent water by weight. You sound like you are drinking more than enough and contrary to popular opinion is is generally okay to rely on your sense of thirst, or at least the colour of your urine (it should be a pale straw colour) to know whether you are drinking enough.
