Hi, I am 21 and trying to lose about a stone before my holiday this summer. I am intolerant to wheat (but not gluten) and I use wheat free pasta and breads but I was wondering if you had any advice for any good alternatives I can try? Convenience is really important to me because I am on the go a lot, and I often find buying lunch out is hard and I end up diving for crisps because I can't eat sandwiches. I'd really appreciate any help you can give me!
There are plenty of alternative grains you can eat if you are intolerant to wheat, most of which you are probably aware of if you have had this intolerance for some time. These include: rye (which is available as rye bread); rice; oats; millet; barley; buckwheat; spelt; and quinoa.
Lunchtime is often the most difficult time when you can't eat wheat and buying lunch out can be a real problem. Alternatives that are available can be quite restrictive and many are not particularly healthy or conducive to losing weight, as you have found out. The main thing you can do here is be prepared as much as you can, by having your own food with you. My suggestion is that you make sure you always have some rice cakes, oat cakes or rye bread with you, which can be eaten with a salad you can pick up whilst you are out.
Another idea, which is quick and convenient, is to cook extra wheat-free pasta, rice, potatoes (or whatever you are having as your main source of carbohydrate for dinner), and use this as your basis for lunch the next day. Simply mix with some salad and protein (such as lean chicken or tuna) and drizzle with a low-fat dressing. If time is short, just take the carbohydrate out with you and buy a salad to mix with it at lunchtime.
You can also cook things like rice in bulk and freeze in individual sized portions. That way, you always have something you can whip out of the freezer to form the basis of your lunch.
I hope this helps and that I have given you a few ideas to try.
