Q.

Can I drink too much water?

Since starting this diary I have been drinking loads of water, which I thought was a good thing. I have been told that drinking too much can be bad for me. I have three green teas a day, and drink maybe double my daily allowance and have cut out all pops. So water is my only drink. If I am at the gym I can drink a couple of bottles that hold three 250ml glasses of water. I also may drink a couple of glasses with my meals to help fill me up too. Any advice on if this is right or wrong?

Our expert says...

If you’re happy with how much water you are drinking and it doesn’t feel physically uncomfortable and you aren’t forcing yourself to drink when you really don’t want to, then you should be absolutely fine. There have been one or two cases of extreme levels of water ingestion that have led to water intoxication, but this is very rare and difficult to do. That said, water as an appetite suppressant only really works if it’s in a suspension with food – as a soup for example. If you’re drinking lots of water to help you lose weight it probably won’t be successful. If it’s to feel alert and hydrated and as an alternative to eating or drinking high calorie items, fair enough. Hope this helps!
