Q.

Can eating bread make you put on weight?

Although I went over my calorie intake once this week, I adjusted the rest of the days and have ended being under by at least 2000 cals this week - more if you take into consideration the exercise that I have done. However I have been eating lots more bread than usual sometimes 6 slices a day. I have been eating the invisible crust bread as it has the same number of cals as nimble but tastes better. My weight has gone up by two pounds this week. Help!

Our expert says...

In theory, wherever you get your calories from shouldn't make a difference, and certainly not a difference that amounts to a weight gain of 2 pounds a week. So I suspect that much of you weight gain is not to do with food but to do with fluid. The amount of fluid you hold can be differ depending on what time of the month it is and also how much salt you have eaten. If increasing your bread intake has meant you have also increased your carbohydrate intake compared with the amount you normally eat, this could also explain some fluid gain as for every one part of stored carbohydrate you hold in your muscles you also hold three parts of water. The last explanation could be that you have an intolerance to wheat, but I think this unlikely (unless you feel bloated, uncomfortable and have other digestive symptoms). Hopefully in another week or two the progress will be downwards again. As you know the path of weight loss is rarely a smooth one! One last possibility - if you have being adding spread to your bread could you have possibly underestimated how much? When we are talking a high fat spread like butter or full fat margarine, even a small error can make a big difference.
