Are food labels truthful about the calories they contain?

I'm not really a big cook so I was wondering if you can always trust the calories written on the fast ready meals that you buy?

My understanding is that food manufacturers allow some variation within a set of controlled tolerances for nutrients, particularly fat. This can therefore have an impact on calories in the final product. On low fat products, the fluctuation allowed is greater, which sounds bad, but isn't really when you consider going from say 3g of fat in a product to 4g (a 33% increase), isn't actually that important as both levels are low. What I am saying is that though there will be some variation, in a batch of the same product there are likely to be some that are over and some that are under when it comes to calories, with the average being as stated on the label. Over days and weeks with a variety of different foods, the figures are actually as near to the truth as they can be and therefore you can trust them when it comes to dieting.
