Q.

Will my body's metabolism change when I am on Holiday?

I am going on holiday to Italy. My concern is that I have my body thinking in a way that I am losing weight and happy with this - from 15st to 13st 3lb since 15th June; My concern is that I go on holiday and they eat a good lot of pasta and oils and I do not want to change my body?s metabolism if this is the correct train of thought. Or can I go away and take what comes at me and deal with it on my return?? TIA - Michael

Hi Michael

You don’t need to worry about changing your body’s metabolism, though admittedly if you have been eating a lot of protein (meat, fish etc.) and not much carb (pasta, bread etc.)  you may put on a couple of pounds of water weight as your body readjusts. No, the key thing will be watching portion size and how much oil you slosh. You may not be able to log on and use the site when you are out there, but bear in mind each fist-sized serving of pasta is around 150g and you can do a rough calorie calculation from there. Try to  think in terms of how many tablespoons of oil you are adding  (at around 123 cals each) and try to avoid filled pastas and creamy sauces. Parmesan is fine in moderation to add flavour - better than lots of sauce, unless it’s a tomato and basil one! Try to get in lots of exercise when you are there, and hopefully you won’t put on the pounds. Have a wonderful time - Italy is one of my favourite places on earth!
