Q.

Why is my weight going down then back up?

I've been dieting for about 5 week and going to the gym/classes at least 3 times a week. I weigh 9.10 and I?m 5.3. How long until I notice any results? My weight goes down then straight back up next day. Thanks

A.

Our expert says...

Hello there.

I know that when you are trying to lose weight 5 weeks can seem an awful long time, but be please be reassured that it is not that long really. It is good news that you are exercising 3 times a week, as this can make a real difference to weight loss, and, if you are keeping to your daily food targets, over time you are going to lose weight.

Our weight does tend to naturally fluctuate from day to day (due to hormones, water retention and numerous other factors), so this may be the reason why you are seeing your weight go down and then up again. For this reason, it is best not to weigh yourself every day, as it is easy to become demotivated and disheartened when you see this happening. It is best to weigh yourself weekly (at the most), at the same time of day, after the same routine, wearing the same clothes, and on the same scales to try and get the most comparable week on week reading.

Meanwhile, I would encourage you to be particularly vigilant when filling in your food diary. Make sure you write everything down (no matter how small ? the items all add up!) and weigh all your portion sizes rather than estimating them. If you are already doing this, or this makes no difference, you could consider reducing your calories for a couple of weeks to see if this kick starts things. It would be fine to reduce your daily target by 100-200 calories for a week or so, but don't go below 1200 calories a day.

With some people it can take a few weeks for the results of their hard work to show on the scales. Just keep going and try to keep a positive outlook by telling yourself that you will reach your goal in the end. I am sure that you will!
