Q.

Why have I not lost anything yet?

I am two weeks into my diet to get from 9 stone 2lbs to 8 stone 6. Despite following my daily calorie target of 1700 and daily exercise of 200 calories I have not lost anything! I make sure I am inputting the correct quantities and I know I am eating less because I am often hungry! I also take regular daily exercise (I walk to and from work everyday - 20 minute walk each way) and go to the gym three times a week. Is there any reason why I haven't lost anything? I know that I do not have a lot to lose and at 5'6 I am already slim but just to get below 9 stone is something I have wanted to do for ages. I am finding it fairly easy to stick to this diet but when I got on the scales this morning I was expecting at least to have lost a pound! Could it be because I prior to this diet I was already exercising and so it's going to take longer for results because of this? Please help, I don't want to give up so please give me some good news!!! Thanks. Miranda

Thank you for writing in rather than giving up. It is frustrating when you follow your daily calorie and exercise targets and don?t lose weight, but the important thing is not to give up at this early stage.

As you have pointed out, inputting the correct quantities, rather than estimating or guessing, is really important when using this site, so it is good that you are doing this. Remembering to input everything you eat and drink, no matter how small, is equally important as all these calories soon add up.

You say you are often hungry, which makes me wonder if you are eating enough high, fibre and filling carbohydrates. White carbohydrates (for example, white bread, pasta and rice) are quickly digested into simple sugars, which soon leave you feeling hungry. On top of that, excess sugar in your blood stream is soon removed and stored as fat, so the wholegrain, brown carbohydrates are much better for you when trying to lose weight.

As you were exercising before you started this diet, you would probably benefit from increasing your exercise regime, if you can. For some people it does take a week or two for the weight loss to start registering on the scales. It can also be more difficult to lose a little weight when you are near your natural weight. With both these things, patience and perseverance generally pay off!
