Q.

Why have I gained weight since I joined?

Hi, I am a reasonably new member. I have been sticking to the calories allowed on my profile and I've been going to the gym 4 times a week, but in the last two weeks I have gained 3 pounds. Please could you give me an insight as to why? Thank you

A.

Our expert says...

Hello there and welcome.

Well, something is not right here, as you should not be gaining weight if you are sticking within your calorie and fat targets and burning off calories through regular exercise.

So, first of all, there are a few things you can check. Are you sure that you are entering absolutely everything into your food diary? It is really easy to forget the things we have outside of our normal meals, for example milk in drinks, spreads on bread, salad dressing, food other people offer us or snacks we may grab whilst on the go. But the calories from these all add up quite quickly and can easily make the difference between being above or below target.

Secondly, portion sizes are equally important. I think it is very important, especially in the early days of a diet, to weigh everything that you eat, rather than estimate the portion size. Sometimes portions can look alarming small when you do this and you realise you have been over-estimating. If this happens, use a smaller plate or bowl so that it looks fuller!

It is great that you are going to the gym 4 times a week. Make sure that you are as active as you can be on the days you don't go to the gym, by doing all the usual things like walking up the stairs, getting off the bus a stop earlier etc. You may also want to check that you selected the right activity level when you set up your profile, as this will have been used to set your targets.

I suggest that you check all of these things and persevere. Of course, there may be other factors playing a part here too, such as hormonal changes as part of your monthly cycle causing water retention. If this is happening, this should pass and the weight loss will resume again. Keep going and good luck!
