Q.

Why am I losing the plot after being successful?

Why is it that sometimes after months of losing and being really good, suddenly almost overnight it seems that the plot is well and truly gone and taken a nose dive? I know what I need to do but why does it seem so hard to get back on track and out of this rut? I have lost nearly 2 stone, and done really good, but now, day by day, it is getting harder and harder to get back into it despite the fact that it is only 8 weeks to an important family wedding. Your input would be appreciated.

Our expert says...

There?s no set answer to this as we all are different! Some people get bored with something even after seemingly enjoying it for a while, others go hot and cold all the time. Only just a very few of us have the grit and determination to stick at it all the time! What I would say though is there is usually some stress or trigger that kicks off your disinterest - in your case it may have been that you were no longer seeing the losses every week to motivate you? In fact a prolonged plateau is one of the key reasons people give up on weight loss, but a plateau is actually the time you are being most successful of all, simply by holding on!

I understand you are finding it harder and harder, and at this point, to save things slipping away altogether, you need to refocus on your goals, remember the success you have already had, and introduce some changes that will trigger your interest. Perhaps you could shake up what you are eating completely (whilst still meeting your calorie goal), and maybe also take up a new exercise or some other form of activity that would interest you. Use the resources available to you on this site (talking to others is always helpful) and perhaps you could also go out looking for an outfit for the wedding so that you have a really pleasant goal to aim for! I know it's tough, but I do hope you manage to get back to it. Remember when you are at your goal, you won't always have to restrict your calories as much as you are now. So there is light at the end of the tunnel!
