What diet changes can reduce high blood pressure?

I need to lose weight to lower my blood pressure. Any food stuff I should avoid or eat?

A.

Our expert says...

Hi,

Losing weight should certainly help your blood pressure and research has shown that diet can help with high blood pressure too.  You should aim to eat as natural a diet as possible, which will be one which is high in fibre, vitamins and minerals.

Wholegrains and oats would be good sources of carbohydrate for you. I am sure that you have been told to avoid salt and salty foods – this is to avoid excess sodium. This includes processed foods which tend to have a high salt content, often without tasting salty!  Most vegetables are rich in the mineral potassium, which balances sodium in the body, so this is another good reason to eat your 5 a day.  Potassium is a key mineral in blood pressure regulation.

The essential Omega 3 fats found in fish oils have also been shown to help keep the blood thin, and be beneficial to blood pressure, and oily fish would be good to eat regularly in your diet.  These are fish such as salmon, fresh tuna (not tinned), mackerel, trout and sardines.  You can also eat eggs which are fortified with Omega 3, if you are not too keen on fish.

I hope this helps.
