Snacking on fruit

I feel like I have all the weird questions, but here's another. Fruit. I'm always reading people say "if you're hungry, have an apple" or some other fruit/veg. The problem is, when I eat fruit I tend to go from "snackish to ravenous"! If I have an apple at 10am (I usually breakfast before 7, lunch at 12) then I will struggle to wait til lunch! In fact, I get proper hunger pains! Is there any reason why fruit/veg affects me this way? [If I have something like a babybel, I'll be fine. If I have time to go the full-on protein breakfast (eggs, bacon etc), I won't even be hungry til lunch.]

You are not alone in experiencing this!  Fruit is a good snack, but for a lot of people it is not a satisfying snack as it tends to be digested and absorbed very quickly.

 

Also, fruit does contain natural sugars.  Although this is much better for you than refined sugar, in a biscuit for example, natural sugars can still cause blood sugar levels to rise and fall quiet quickly.  I suspect this is what is happening to you.  When blood sugar levels fall too low, the body ‘craves’ food to bring blood sugar levels back up again.  This is no doubt when you suddenly feel ravenous!

 

You will be pleased to know that there is a relatively simple solution. By adding a few seeds or nuts to your fruit snack, you will increase the protein and good fat content of that snack whilst keeping it a healthy option.  Protein and fat take longer to digest and the overall result is that the stomach takes longer to digest the complete snack and blood sugar disruption is much less.

 

However, I am only talking about a small number of nuts, as they are very calorific!  3-4 cashew nuts, or 2-3 brazil nuts, should be sufficient.  So, I suggest you try it and see if it helps. All the best.
