Q.

Not eating my calories but not hungry....

Since starting on the GI concept diet I am finding that I am not hungry at all. I am allowed 1,450 cals a day and since I started I am actually struggling - yes I did say struggling to eat my calories allowance. I am actually eating less than 1,000 cals a day and some days about 1,100. NOW PLEASE DON'T SHOUT( I KNOW I AM) BUT I AM AWARE I AM NOT SUPPOSED TO DO THAT BUT,,,,,,,,,,,,,as I said I am just not hungry. I have had homemade prawn curry with basmati rice and have had brekkie today.(I did not have lunch today as I am off work and I did have a ww yogurt and apple in the afternoon). When I do have lunch it is usually pitta with meat and salad etc. I do have my fruit/veg quota most days over 125% but hey how can I eat when I do not really want to? This is the first time ever i have found a plan that does this even my OH is gobsmacked with how little I am eating. Today I have had 850 cals having a low GI ginger snack bar for supper but even that brings me to still under 1,000.Help can you give some positive comments and not just the chastisements as I am fully aware that it is not right for me to be eating so little, but what can i do when I just ain't hungry??!!!?!?!?!?!!?!?!? Our expert says...

Hi Catherine,

Foods eaten on a low GI diet tend to contain a lot of fibre and slow release carbohydrates, which is why, as you have found out, they can be very filling.  If you weren’t eating this type of food before, it is natural to notice the difference, but the feeling of fullness can sometimes lessen over time as your body gets used to your new way of eating.

The calorie targets we recommend are based on a level that should give a slow steady weight loss, in a way that’s sustainable because you won't feel too hungry, whilst also providing enough calories to ensure adequate nutrient intake, if you eat in a balanced way.  Most health professionals don't recommend going below 1000 calories a day and we only recommend 1200 calories as an occasional short term measure.

You do seem to be doing a lot of things right, such as eating plenty of fruit and veg each day, but it would be better, if you can, to try to get nearer to your daily target.  Aim to eat 3 regular meals a day, even if they are small ones, and incorporate some lean protein, complex carbs and fruit and veg with each meal.  That way you should be getting all the nutrients your body needs whilst still losing weight.  All the best.
