Q.

My target weight is above my BMI, is that okay?

I am way out of my BMI. According to the BMI calculator on the site I have a BMI of 27.8 (Male - height 1.80 - weight 90.1 kg's (now 88.4). My target weight loss is to hit 84 kg's. That will give me a BMI at 25.9. That is still classified as overweight on the BMI. At a push I might get down as low as 82 kg's but that would still be overweight according to the BMI. I would need to be below 79 kg's to be normal weight and that's not going to happen. I play a lot of ice hockey (2 hours 3 time per week) and run about 30 minutes a day to keep my cardio fitness up for ice hockey. I have well developed (and solid) leg, bum and calf muscles which might cover some of the difference. All my current weight is on my stomach (beer, wine and cheese). Once that's gone I do not intend to push on down just to hit the normal BMI but wondered if you might comment on the large difference between what should be my normal BMI and what I think should be a good weight range for me (82 - 84 kg's).

Our expert says...

Thanks for your question. BMI is only a guide and for someone such as yourself who is very fit and has well developed muscle it is not a good reflection of whether you are a healthy weight or not. Because muscle weighs more than fat it's quite common for athletes - rugby players in particular - to have a BMI in the ?overweight? range so you should definitely aim to just get rid of your gut and leave it at that. Your waist measurement is also important. To be healthy it should ideally be no more than 37 inches. I hope that helps, and good luck.
