I don't like fish! What alternatives are there to get omega

Or rather, no fish! I can't eat fish. It makes me physically sick, and I can't go near the fish counter in shops. I have tried - people kept insisting I hadn't tried it their way, plus I know it's good for me - but now I just say I'm allergic to it. Almost all diets push the 'oily fish 2-3 times a week' thing, but I see very few alternatives offered. What alternatives are there for people who don't/can't/won't eat fish to get those all-important omega nutrients? Tks

Our expert says...

Hi there,

There is no doubt that oily fish is really good for you, but I accept that there are some people who just don’t like fish!  But don’t worry; there are many other ways to get these essential Omega 3 fats.

My first recommendation would be nuts and seeds, especially green pumpkin seeds.  Sprinkle these onto your breakfast cereal, salads and soups to incorporate them into your diet easily, or eat them as a snack with fruit.

Walnuts are another rich source of Omega 3 and make a great snack when eaten with an apple.  You can also buy walnut oil and use this as a salad dressing.

Flaxseeds (also known as linseeds) are also a good source of Omega 3 oils.  However, the oil is inside the very hard shell of the linseed, so you need to grind the seeds to obtain the oils (otherwise the seeds tend to pass straight through you, making a great natural laxative!). Alternatively, you can buy flaxseed oil, from supermarkets or health food shops, and use this.  Flaxseed oil should not be heated, so this oil is not for cooking with but for drizzling over salads.  It is not as tasteless as olive oil, so you may prefer mixing flaxseed oil with some lemon and herbs when you use it as a salad dressing.

I hope this has given you plenty of ideas!
