Q.

I can't shake off a cold. Is my diet lacking in something?

I wonder if you could help me out. I am a little worried that I have had a cold for the last 3 weeks. I have eaten over my 5-a-day and do eat very well but I cant seem to shake it. Do you think it is because I am lacking in something? I am vegetarian and don't really drink milk or eat cheese. Hope you can shed a little light. Thanks, Ailsa

It?s that final pull out of winter, and it does seem that for many of us, coughs and colds we caught a few weeks ago are still hanging on. To be honest, I doubt it's too much to do with your diet - you say you eat well and have plenty of fruit and veg - so hopefully very soon you should start to feel better, and I'm sure some sunshine will help.

It?s worth bearing in mind however, the often overlooked importance of getting adequate protein for a healthy immune system - so eat a good couple of vegetarian protein sources - e.g. beans, quorn or tofu - every day. If you?re still concerned that your immune system isn't as responsive as it should, you might also try a daily A-Z multivitamin and mineral. Nuts, sardines, green vegetables and figs can help to replace the calcium you are not getting from dairy products, but if you feel you are not getting enough of these you should consider a calcium supplement too.
