Q.

I've only lost 1lb in 6 weeks - help!

I am starting to think there is something wrong with me! I think I am doing okay with the diary, I am certainly checking before sticking food in my mouth! I am really pleased I found this site as I am so aware of my fat & cal intake now, and everything in moderation is keeping me on track. For a start I was eating under my cals & fat and someone suggested this is maybe why I am not losing, So I started eating more, which is when I lost the 1lb, I am trying hard to add exercise to my day around my 1 yr old and working, which I find hard. But I am trying and this is 100% more than I was doing before, yet I still don't see any loss? I am really getting down and this is the longest I have stuck to something I was failing at! Please help I am desperate to lose the pounds!

Our expert says...

Hi,

Thanks for writing in rather than giving up!  It sounds like you are doing well and learning about different foods from filling in the diet diary – a lot of people find it quite an education, so you are not on your own!

However, it is unusual that you have not lost a lost a little more weight than you have.  It may be worth checking a few things.  For example, are you meticulously weighing and measuring everything that you eat and drink?  The reason that I ask this is that we all tend to underestimate when we don’t do this and the additional calories can soon add up.  For the same reason, it is really important that everything is put into the food diary – snacks, shared treats, the odd sweets etc. They all count at the end of the day!

Otherwise, you are doing the right thing in trying to eat as near to your calorie target each day.  Try to spread your meals and snacks evenly throughout the day to keep your metabolism fired up. Base your diet on complex brown carbohydrates, which will fill you up, with lean protein and make sure you eat your 5 fruit and veg a day.  Try and minimise sugar in your diet, as these are ‘empty’ calories which can trigger blood sugar imbalances and cravings, and drink plenty of water. And if you keep adding some exercise into your daily routine, I’m sure you will start to see the results you are looking for.  Keep at it and good luck!
