Q.

I'm new to the site - how can I kick start my weight loss?

Hiya - I've just finished my first week using this diet site (which is great btw). I have stuck within my calories (well a total of 200 over for the week) but have burned over 3,000 in exercise. I walk the dog every day for an hour over fairly rough terrain and make sure I puff myself out by going up steep hills etc.

I eat at least 5 portion of fruit & veg a day, most days quite a lot more, plus brown and granary for all carbs. To be honest though, I haven't had to change that much. I did the exercise already and have only really cut out a yogurt or something in the evening to get within my calorie intake. in the first week I've only lost half a pound - more worrying as I have over 4 stone to lose! is there anything I can do to kick start weight loss?

Our expert says...

Hello and welcome!

It sounds like you have had a good first week, so please don?t get disheartened that you have only lost half a pound. Sometimes it takes a few weeks to get into the right pattern of exercise and diet and to start to lose weight.

You are certainly doing the right things ? a good diet and plenty of exercise. Make sure you fill in your diary with everything that you eat and drink, no matter how small. It is also a good idea when you first start to use the Food Diary to weigh everything, so that your calories and fat that are recorded are really accurate. It is very easy to underestimate portion sizes and we have all done it in the past!

I would also recommend avoiding any products that contain sugar, as excess sugar soon becomes stored as fat. Low fat products can sometimes be quite high in sugar to make them more palatable.

You say that you haven?t had to make many dramatic changes to your diet, so it may be that you do need to make a few alterations to kick start your metabolism into weight-loss mode! You could reduce your calorie intake by 100-200 calories a week for a couple of weeks, although it is not recommended to go below 1200. Alternatively, you could avoid carbohydrates after 6pm, which some people find helpful in stimulating weight loss when they hit a plateau. Make sure you eat sufficient carbohydrates earlier in the day, however, or you will soon start to feel tired and lethargic.

I'm sure you will soon find what works best for you. I wish you well.
