Q.

How many eggs should I eat a week?

I was wondering how many eggs per week you would consider healthy eating. It seems that new studies have shown that one egg/day has no impact on cholesterol levels. What would you recommend?

A.

Our expert says...

Hi.

You are right that the view about eggs has changed recently and that in the past there have been concerns about the high fat and cholesterol content of eggs. However, the kind of fat in an egg depends on what you feed the chickens. If chickens are fed Omega 3 rich food, such as flax seeds or fishmeal, you get eggs high in Omega 3. These types of eggs can be particularly useful as a source of essential Omega 3 if you don't eat a lot of oily fish.

As for cholesterol, it is easy to forget that we need cholesterol for good health. It is true that egg yolks do contain quite high levels of cholesterol, but they also contain lecithin, which has the ability to dissolve cholesterol and other fats. In 2000, a review of all the studies that had investigated cholesterol, eggs and heart disease was published in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition. It concluded that no association was seen between egg consumption of more than one egg per day and the risk of heart disease. This means that there is no evidence that eating up to 7 eggs a week makes any difference to your cardiovascular risk.

I would always recommend buying the best quality eggs you can afford. You have probably seen a lot of the TV and press coverage about chickens, and eggs, during January and it is certainly worth remembering that an egg is as healthy as the chicken that laid it!
