How can I cope with a diet plateau - my motivation is waning

I've been on diets for the last 18 years but for the last few have found it really hard. I can lose the first few pounds albeit slowly and then i seem to hit a plateau which loses my motivation. I'm trying to up my exercise and try to go for a regular half an hour walk each evening once I get home from work but I am still staying the same. Do you think my body will start losing weight again or is it saying no to anymore dieting. Please help me to stick to it.!!!!

You've hit the dreaded diet plateau, and it's very hard to stay motivated. If it's any comfort, most dieters go through this phase, but you can get through it. A plateau occurs because your body is noticing a lower calorie input and is slowing down its metabolism in order to conserve energy. Diet plateaux are quite common among repetitive dieters, whose bodies have become experts at slowing down to conserve calories.

To get through it, you are already taking the right approach by upping your physical activity, so stick with it. Sometimes you can plateau for a few weeks or even put on a pound or two, so stay firm and pat yourself on the back for all the weight you have lost so far. Before you know it you'll be on the downward trend again!
