Q.

Does drinking booze affect losing weight?

Does drinking booze affect losing weight !?...I am still within the calories & do a fair amount of exercise but not much has happened in the last 2 weeks or so.....although they have been quite boozy: 50 to 60 units a week if I am being honest. Does this hinder weight loss?

Hi there. I think there may well be a lot of interest in your question, as we would all like to think that drinking won't have a negative effect on losing weight!

In theory, if you account for every drink in your food diary and keep within your daily calorie allowance you should continue to lose weight. In practice, however, the body is a very complex piece of machinery and drinking alcohol, especially in large amounts, tends to mess up the way it works.

Alcohol puts your body under quite a large amount of stress as it has to break the alcohol down and excrete it before it causes any damage. Alcohol is also high in sugar, which is quickly absorbed and results in a rapid rise in blood sugar levels. This stimulates a corresponding increase in insulin production, which has two major effects.

Firstly, as high blood sugar is dangerous to your health, insulin lowers blood sugar levels by removing it from the blood and storing it in fat cells. Secondly, if blood sugar levels have risen too quickly, insulin may over-compensate and remove too much glucose and cause hypoglycaemia (too low a level). This in turn can lead to food cravings.

Add to this the fact that alcohol is high in calories (7 cals per gram, which is second only after fat at 9cals per gram) and has very little nutritional value and you will see why drinking in moderation is recommended if you are trying to lose weight! The occasional blow - out can be justified (and even fun!), but you are far better to use your calorie allowance on food, which will provide the vitamins, minerals and fibre that your body needs to function efficiently ..... including burning up that excess fat!
