Q.

Does coffee count towards my water intake?

I drink lots of coffee with skimmed milk but no sugar. But I don't really drink water. Does the coffee count as part of daily water intake? Also I've found on the odd occasions I've drunk quite a lot of water it?s made me hungry rather than full.

Our expert says...

Hi,

The recommended daily water intake is around 1 ½ to 2 litres a day, or 8 glasses.  This should be spread fairly evenly throughout the day, if possible, to keep you hydrated.  This is where our water meter can be very useful in keeping track of how much you have drunk.

You can count most liquids towards your water intake (with the exception of alcohol, I’m afraid,  which causes loss of water), but do remember that tea and coffee are not as hydrating as pure water, so make sure you allow for this.  So, try and limit your coffee and make sure you drink more glasses of water, or non-caffeinated beverages, than cups of coffee.

Fruit and herbal teas are not dehydrating and make good substitutes and might not make you hungry. Have you tried any of these?  There are many different varieties to try or you can make your own with hot water by adding lemon and fresh ginger, or peppermint leaves.  Experiment and find which flavours you like and enjoy!

P.S The water meter works manually - just click on the '+' symbol to add a glass of water. A glass is 250ml.
