Can you eat too many oats?

Hi there, I eat a bowl of oatso simple in the morning for my brekkie with a banana cut up into it, but I make it with soya milk as I suffer with IBS and can't handle that amount of milk in one sitting. I have been enjoying a bowl for my lunch as well but without the banana. I'll have an apple for afternoon snack, then for my tea ''ll have, for example, a healthy salad with chicken breast. Now someone has told me that having that many oats is bad for me - and can make me put weight on. But since I started this program I have lost 6lb - so surely it can't be that bad? Is it bad to have two bowls of oatso simple in one day even with soya milk?

Hi,

First of all, congratulations on losing 6 lbs since starting this programme. Sometimes the first few pounds can be the most difficult to lose, but once the weight starts to come off it can be extremely motivating.

To answer your question, oats are an extremely healthy grain and I cannot see how eating oats twice a day can be bad for you or can make you put on weight (as long as you stay within your calorie target). Oats contain a concentrated source of soluble dietary fibre and many nutrients, particularly manganese, selenium, magnesium and B vitamins, and have been linked to lowering cholesterol levels in many studies. Oats also exert a beneficial effect in stabilising blood sugar levels.

However, with processed breakfast cereals, including those made from oats, it is always worth checking the ingredients list for sugar, salt and any additives, as it is worth buying cereals that contain the lowest amounts of these ingredients.

The drawback to repeating meals in the same day is that you limit the different foods you eat and this can lead to a lack of nutrients that you would otherwise obtain by eating different foods. So, longer term, I wouldn't recommend that you keep up this practice, but try to introduce a different lunch every other day. Good choices would include tuna and salad with a jacket potato (always eating the skin if it is clean), soup and a salad sprinkled with mixed seeds or a vegetable omelette.
