Can I kick start my diet on 1000 calories a day?

With a good multivitamin/mineral, would it be so bad to kick start a diet on 1000 calories a day and only for 2 weeks. If I were to lose 7 pounds it would be such a great encouragement to continue with 1200/1400 calories a day?

Hi,

We don’t really recommend going below 1200 calories a day for any length of time, as this can lead to not getting adequate nutrients in your diet, as well as being hungry and grumpy!

However, if you are fit and healthy and going to use your 1000 calories wisely by eating a balanced healthy diet, I think you will be ok for 2 weeks.  Just make sure your diet is varied and nutritious, with different complex carbohydrates to keep your energy up (for example,wholemeal bread, brown rice, whole-wheat pasta or noodles), lean protein and lots of vegetables and fruit.  Eat different coloured vegetables every day, as they all contain different health-promoting phytonutrients, and vary your foods each day.  And don’t forget to keep your water intake up too!
