Our expert says...

Hi Zoe

Thank you for your query. Dark chocolate is an interesting topic because of the benefits from eating it, compared with other chocolates like milk or white.

There is some evidence that dark chocolate could be a 'superfood' as research is evidencing that due to natural antioxidants present, it might help lower blood pressure. HOWEVER, the researched benefit  is based on eating one sma ll piece of dark chocolate each day as it is still a very high fat product and therefore high in calories for the purposes of your food diary.

Many people are surprised that dark chocolate is not low in fat and calories, as the 'healthy' bonus of the chocolate often confuses.

So, our figures for very dark chocolate is 100g = 550-575 calories and 30-50g of fat. As this particular brand doesn't provide the nutritional values on the pack or their website, we would suggest you use the higher end of these figures and only eat in moderation, max 100 calories per day of this type of product (around 20g).

With dark chocolate, this is of course much easier to do than with milk chocolate, as the bitterness can be so much more satisfying from a small piece than you would get with milk or white chocolate.

If you feel a 20g piece is not sufficient for your craving, you could always try it in a home made hot chocolate, made with skimmed milk, or even grated over some natural yoghurt or low fat ice cream.

I hope this helps.

Vicky
