Q.

Are the weights in the database for raw or cooked foods?

Please can you tell me if the weights for cooked food in the database are the raw or cooked value e.g. Old Potatoes Baked with skin. Should I be entering the raw weight or weight when cooked?

A.

Our expert says...

The description will tell you whether the value is for the raw or cooked product. In the example you have given, 'Old Potatoes Baked with skin' will be the cooked value - so you need to weigh your potato AFTER cooking.

This question has also been asked with regard to rice and pasta. In this case, the values are for the dry, uncooked product unless otherwise stated.

It's quite hard to judge how much dry rice or pasta makes a cooked portion, and so I've included guidelines below (feel free to adjust down these portion sizes as they are only based on the food manufacturer's guidelines):

100g white rice, raw = 348 cals / 1.4g fat

According to the pack instructions a typical portion for one person when uncooked would be 62.5g (which equals 218 cals / 0.8g fat)

100g pasta, raw = 362 cals / 1.7g fat

According to pack instructions, a typical portion for one person when uncooked would be 75g (which equals 272 cals / 1.0g fat)

You can add a specific weight of rice or pasta by just clicking on 'add weight' in the serving size list and entering the exact dry weight in grams or ounces in the box.
