Q.

Am I having too much sugar?

I have completely cut down my calories but am very concerned that although my calories are just below the recommended amount to lose weight each day I am eating far too much sugar! Is it possible that even when keeping within the calories recommended I won't lose weight because my sugar intake is too high? what should I be aiming for sugar wise if my recommended calories is 1400 a day?

This is an interesting question, and the official answer is that it doesn?t matter what the composition of your diet is, only calories count when it comes to whether you lose weight or not. However there is a problem with excess sugar in that it can exacerbate a condition called insulin resistance - often caused by obesity in the first place - in which the body steadily become less sensitive to insulin, causing more and more of this fat conserving hormone to be pumped out.

High circulating insulin and sugar levels - a prediabetic condition if you like - can simply make it harder to shift weight, and abdominal fat is the most difficult to shift as a result.

Sugary foods also tend to be high GI - that is they raise blood sugar quickly but not for very long with the result that hunger returns very quickly.

Although it's calories that matter, I think you?ll find the weight shifts more easily if you try to reduce some of the sugary foods in your diet, swapping them for whole grain products, fruit and veg and yogurt instead. The Guidleine Daily amount for a 2000 cal diet is nor more than 90g total sugars, so you can reduce this to about 60g for a 1400 cal diet.
