Q.

Am I eating too many carbs?

Am I eating too much carb? I'm unsure on portion sizes and, if I'm getting it right. I tend to eat fruit/yoghurt or 30g cereal for breakfast (oatibix, porridge, cornflakes), for lunch I have salad (lettuce, tomato, cucumber), with 4 x ryvita with a protein source. Or 2 x 45g slices of granary bread with protein source, or soup with 1 small granary/multigrain roll. My tea is usually made with 75g rice/pasta or 1 square of noodles from a pack or a meduim sized potato (150-200g when not cooked) with protein and veg. My protein is mainly chicken, fish, low fat mince.
My snacks are 25g seeds and fruit mainly. With the occasional treat like a small chocolate bar or low fat crisps. I also occasionally have packet sauces to add to pasta etc...

Would this amount to too much carbs in a day? I think I'm getting the portion sizes right at the moment. My current weight is 15 stone 12lb. So I'm not sure if that makes a difference as my carb sizes may need to go down as my daily cals goes down. My current allowance of cals is just under 1,700, which I'm finding hard to stick to.
Any advice would be appreciated. Thank You

A.

Hi.

Well, first of all I would like to congratulate you on eating a healthy diet! You are eating 3 sensible meals a day, plenty of fruit and vegetables with lean protein and low calorie, healthy snacks. So, although you are finding it quite tough to stick to at the moment, I would encourage you to keep going. If you continue to eat like this, and stay within your daily calorie and fat targets, the weight will come off bit by bit.

In theory, wherever you get your calories from should not make a difference to your weight loss, as long as you account for them. However, to ensure you eat a balanced diet that provides all the vitamins and minerals your body needs to function efficiently and keep you healthy, it is best to stick within some guidelines.

The healthy recommendation is that around 30-35% of our calories should come from fat, around 15% from protein and 50-55% from carbohydrate. For 1700 calories, this means that you should be eating around 890 calories (52.5%) from carbohydrate, which equates to approximately 223g a day. So, at a quick glance, you don't seem to be eating too much of your diet as carbs, but now you can keep a closer eye on it!
