Q.

Am I eating enough and what are good fats?

Hi. I have a very active job and am on my feet for over 8hrs a day, then I come home and try and do 30 mins on my treadmill.... I'm concerned that I won't be eating enough to cover what I need and will be putting on the fat that my body takes in because it won't think I'm having enough! What are good fats to eat? Or what are good small things to eat that are not too bad for you but will help me with this problem. Thanks

A.

Our expert says...

Hi.

There are a couple of parts to this question, so let's start with the first one. I am assuming that you put your activity level at work as active when you input your personal details and you are exercising on the treadmill to meet your exercise targets. If this is the case, your daily calorie allowance will have taken this into account and you will be eating sufficient to cover your needs, but also to lose weight in a healthy, sustainable way. I don't know how long you have been with Nutracheck, but you will know yourself if this is working. You don't need to worry about the amount of fat you are eating, as long as you stay within your target.

But you are right to ask which fats are the good ones, as there are several different types, which I like to call the good, the bad and the ugly! The 'bad' are saturated fats (found in butter and cheese), which can lead to cardiovascular disease. The 'ugly' are trans-fats that are found in fried and processed foods and bakery products. They are used to prolong a product's shelf-life. You should check product labels carefully and avoid these types of fat if possible.

The 'good' fats, which you are asking about, are essential fats that our bodies cannot make, so we need to eat them in our diet. These are called Omega 3 and 6 and are found in seeds, nuts, oily fish (salmon, fresh tuna) and vegetable oils. So, a good snack to provide some of these would be a handful of pumpkin or sunflower seeds, maybe eaten with some fresh fruit.

I hope this has given you some food for thought, as they say!
