Q.

Will weight loss stop if I have too FEW calories?

I just read someone?s post where they were worried that they can?t use up all their given calorie allowance eating healthy food. They claimed that if they didn?t eat their full calorie allowance then they wouldn't lose weight? Is this true? As i find it difficult to eat all of of my calorie allowance too.

A.

Our expert says...

The short answer to your question is no - you do no have to eat all of your food target if you are genuinely feeling satisfied on fewer calories. If anything this will only accelerate your weight loss, which is not a bad thing! Around 1,200 calories is fine - but we would advise against going below 1,000 cals per day.

The reason our service sets 1,400 cals a day as a minimum, is on the expert advice of our consultant, Dr Ian Campbell, and obesity specialist. In his experience, trying to stick to a lower target results in a higher failure rate - and while a lower calorie intake may result in a quicker initial weight loss, your diet will be much more restrictive and therefore harder to sustain. It?s also more likely to be deficient in essential nutrients.

However if you are genuinely feeling full on a lower rate than 1400 calories, then please don?t feel the need to fill up with more food for the sake of it! The whole concept of your body going into ?starvation? mode if you eat too little is much overblown. Of course your metabolism does slow somewhat, but never enough to completely outweigh the weight loss benefits of the calories you are chopping out. And eating regular meals, keeping up your exercise levels and and trying to keep the amount of food you eat fairly consistent from day to day are sensible strategies that should minimise any metabolism slowing effects,

I hope this reassures you. Good luck!
