Q.

Will my medication effect my diet?

Hi there. I'm just starting my diet with your help, but wonder whether having to take lots of medications will affect my diet? I have Multiple Sclerosis, high blood pressure, thyroid is not working, and more meds for a weak bladder and depression. Your advice would be much appreciated.

Our expert says...

Hi there,

Although certain medication may affect weight loss, it is difficult to predict whether any of the meds you are on will have this effect. Of course, the combination of drugs you are on may be an added complication, however this isn't insurmountable so hopefully you should still be able to lose weight on the plan.

Losing weight is a positive step for all the conditions that you're dealing with - not least the high blood pressure. It has also been shown that a healthy weight can be have a positive impact on the symptoms of MS.

Losing weight should be done gradually and at a pace that suits you. Our plan aims for 1-2lbs weight loss per week but if it takes a little longer for you then that's absolutely fine. What is important is that the changes you make are lifelong steps towards a healthier lifestyle - we don't like to think of this as a diet, more about making small changes to become healthier.

Set realistic goals - we usually say to aim for a 10% weight loss to start with rather than trying to reach for a substantial weight loss straight away. When you reach your first goal you can set the next one.

If you are worried about how your medication might affect your weight loss it would be worthwhile having a chat with your GP to see whether there are any known side effects, and whether there are any alternatives that might help.

I wish you all the very best of luck, and please don't hesitate to come back to me with any questions you might have as you embark on your plan.

Kind regards

Janet
