Q.

Will I ever shift the weight after having thyroid cancer?

I know this seems a daft question but I have been stuck this weight for so long now I feel like well, this is me, I'll have to live like it!?

Iwas always slim and then 7 years ago I had thyroid cancer and well, I don't know if it was feeling rough through treatments, or having to be off my thyroxine for months at a time for treatment (after having thyroid removed) but I put on 2 and half stone in 6 months and I never shifted it.

The hospital are very pleased with me and think I have every chance of being ok now - but I keep feeling "stuck" and unable to move on. Should I - even on total thyroxine - lose weight now?

My blood tests are all normal levels. (Even running slightly high thyroxine levels for keeping any cancer recurrence down). My doctors recommend I lose weight and that it would be a good idea. Thank you

A.

Our expert says...

Hi, it sounds like you have been through a very difficult few years and I am glad to hear that your treatment is working and the future looks much brighter.

It is difficult to lose weight when you have a serious illness, which involves operations and medication. But now that things are stable, you can concentrate more on losing the excess weight.

I don't know what your diet involves, but I would recommend that you keep it varied by trying a few new things each week so that your body doesn?t get used to the same foods. We all get stuck in a food rut at some point in time - maybe use the Food Swap section to find some alternative ideas?

Overall, you should base your diet on wholegrain, low GI foods that don't disrupt blood sugar and insulin levels. Try to eat 3 balanced meals a day with low calorie healthy snacks if you get hungry between meals.

Some people find that not eating carbohydrates with their evening meal for a week or so helps to get their weight loss moving again. You might want to give it a try. Fill up on lots of vegetables instead. Apart from being low in calories and high in satisfying fibre, vegetables also contain phytonutrients and antioxidants, which have been shown to offer significant protection against many diseases, particularly cancer.

You don't mention exercise, but my advice again would be to keep it varied. That way you are using different muscles and burning maximum calories by making the body work harder.

I think you are going to have to be patient and accept it may take some time to lose this extra weight. But keep at it ? it will be worth it in the end!
