Q.

Why would hunger cause bad breath?

I have got a very peculiar question. I seem to get really hungry in between meals (even when snacking...although I am eating to my calorie allowance, and eating more than 5 portions of fruit and veg a day), however, I have noticed that when I am really hungry, I tend to get really bad breath (the hungrier I am, the worse it tends to be). Why is this? What could be causing this? I'm drinking plenty of water, so I don't think it?s too do with being dehydrated. Do you have any tips in terms of my diet that would help get rid of the smelly breath? (apart from chewing gum). Thank you

A.

Our expert says...

Hello,

Bad breath is quite a common problem, but most people are unaware until someone points it out to them. There can be a number of reasons for this condition.

Bad breath can be caused by poor or inefficient digestion. In these cases it can help to avoid spicy or strong flavoured foods, which can be more difficult to digest and leave odours in your mouth that can linger for hours. As you say your bad breath is linked to hunger between meals, I would recommend eating little and often throughout the day i.e. reduce your meal sizes and have substantial, healthy snacks between your meals. Make sure that you chew your food thoroughly too, as this can help digestion.

Constipation can be another reason for bad breath. If this applies to you, increase the fibre in your diet, through eating extra wholegrains and vegetables, and drink more water to get things moving again!

Other causes of bad breath often originate in the mouth. For example, this could be a problem with a mouth, nose or throat infection, tooth decay or catarrh. If this problem persists, it may well be worth a visit to your dentist to get these things checked out.

I hope this helps.
