Why is my hair falling out?

I have been doing this for about 6 months and have managed to lose just under a stone. I am happy with my progress but have found that I am struggling with hair loss- this has definitely got worse since I started sticking to the 1400 Cals limit. I have tried to cut out most of the bad foods I often manage to eat under the cal allowance and still work out daily. Although my weight loss has been slow it is getting there. I am concerned about the hair loss and can only think it is because I have cut out a lot of red meat and don't like salad and veg too much. I eat lots of wholemeal bread and chicken but am struggling-I am now taking Hair,skin & Nail supplements as well as a iron supplement daily. I eat 3 brazil nuts daily as I am told that helps with hair loss-Please help r advise what I am doing wrong. Thank you Ashleigh

Hi Ashleigh

Hair loss isn’t usually a nutrition related phenomenon, but in the cases where it is,  a lack of iron ie the most likely protagonist. A lack of protein or B vitamins may also play a part, but this would be less likely as they are less likely to be deficient.

As you are already taking iron, I would expect things to maybe improve if your hair loss is nutrition related. But you may also want to reintroduce some red meat.

There may also be a lag phase of several months, so, don't expect to see results immediately. In the meantime have you seen your GP to explore other routes as to why this might be happening?
