Q.

Why has my skin got worse on my healthier diet?

I have been eating more fruit & vegetables and generally healthier everything for the last 6 weeks but my skin seems worse than ever. I have more spots and black heads than ever before. Can you suggest any foods that can aid my skin. I don't drink as much water as I should but I drink loads of green tea and red bush tea. I do add sweeteners to these and I go through about 2 pints of milk a day. As well as that I eat at least 5 portions of fruit & veg, porridge, quorn, chicken, eggs, brown rice. Is there anything you can suggest? Thank you.

Our expert says...

Hello there,

If you have changed your diet quite radically over the last 6 weeks, this could be a case of your body cleansing and detoxifying through your skin, which would account for why it has got worse. If this is the case, you should see an improvement over the next few weeks.

You are already eating a healthy diet and foods that are good for your skin including antioxidant-rich fruits and vegetables. I recommend at least 5 portions of vegetables a day and a couple of portions of fruit on top of this, if you can. Make sure you eat a variety of different coloured fruit and veg each day to get a wider spread of nutrients. Examples would be: sweet potatoes; berries; grapes; yellow peppers; tomatoes; broccoli; onions; and garlic. Also, make sure you include wholegrains, nuts and seeds (or their oils) and oily fish in your diet. If you don't like oily fish (salmon, fresh tuna, mackerel, trout) you might want to consider a fish oil supplement, as Omega 3 oils are very good for the skin.

Water is important for cleansing and repairing the skin, so it would be worth you drinking more if you can. I would also suggest limiting alcohol, caffeine, chemical food additives, salt, saturated fat and sugar. You are drinking quite a lot of milk each day and I think it would also be worth trying cutting back on, or cutting out, milk for a few weeks to see if your skin improves. You can always replace it with fortified soya or rice milk.

I hope this helps.
