Q.

Why has my skin broken out in blemishes?

Hi there, I started this diet four weeks ago to look better and give myself a boost of confidence. I have cut down on alcohol consumption massively, eat more fruit and veg than I ever have and have so far lost 4 lbs. The only problem is that my skin has reacted really badly and broken out in blemishes and feels really stressed and tired. Is this something to do with the semi-detox? How long will it take for my skin to re-balance? Thanks for your help! Sian [:)] [cry]

Hi Sian,

First of all, well done on the changes you have made to your diet and I'm glad that you are seeing results with the 4lbs that you have lost. I hope this has boosted your confidence!

I do not know what your diet was like before you changed it, but if you have changed your diet quite radically (by eating loads more fruit and veg, for example) this could have stimulated your body into cleansing and detoxifying itself. When this happens it can be quite common for detoxification to occur through your skin, which would account for why your skin has broken out in blemishes. If this is the case, you should see an improvement over the next few weeks as your body rebalances and stabilises itself on your new diet.

Please believe me when I say that in time your new healthy diet will be very good for your skin! As well as your 5-a-day fruit and veg, make sure you include wholegrains, nuts and seeds (for their healthy oils) and oily fish in your diet. Oily fish can be particularly beneficial for the skin and examples include salmon, fresh tuna, mackerel and trout. Water is important too for cleansing and repairing the skin, so try to drink 8 glasses a day. I would also suggest limiting alcohol, caffeine, chemical food additives, salt, saturated fat and sugar. I hope this helps and wish you all the best!
