Q.

Why do I feel nauseous when I forgo lunch or eat late?

Hi Vicky
I have been noticing that if I forgo lunch or have a late breakfast that when I feel hungry it makes me feel nauseous and it takes some food to adjust this. I tried water and tea but that does not affect feeling nauseous. This is particularly so when I have a morning workout on a small breakfast can you shed some light on this?

Our expert says...

Hi there.

It sounds like you have recently changed your eating routine and this has resulted in feeling nauseous. This will be because our bodies are 'programmed' to eat three meals a day and our digestive systems are geared up for this. If we skip a meal, or have a late meal, our bodies do not realise this is going to happen and still prepare for the arrival of food by producing some digestive enzymes. This can lead to a nauseous feeling, as you are experiencing, and it is most likely that eating something is the only way to overcome this.

It is really not a good idea to skip meals. Apart from the impact on digestion, missing meals can play havoc with our blood sugar levels, by causing them to fall too low. This can make us feel very lethargic and 'down' and also often results in carbohydrate cravings and binges, as our bodies try to get our blood sugar up again. For these reasons, it is always best to eat 3 regular meals a day and I always recommend healthy snacks in between meals, never going more than 3-4 hours without eating something.

Feeling nauseous after a morning workout on a small breakfast is most likely due to exercising too soon after eating or eating too much and not allowing sufficient time for digestion to complete. So I would try leaving a bit more time between the two, if you can, or some lighter breakfast options. Make sure you include some wholegrain, slow-release carbohydrate and protein though, for energy, and don't forget to refuel after your workout!
