Q.

Why am I pooing less?

I have noticed for the last 2 weeks since I started back on this programme that I have not been going for a poo for 36 hours. Prior to that I was a 24 hour girl. I eat 1400 cals a day, take regular exercise and eat plenty of fruit and vegetables. I also drink at least 2 litres a day. Can you explain?

Hi.

Well, it is difficult for me to comment without knowing how you have changed your diet since rejoining us. You are certainly doing all the right things to keep those bowels moving ? lots of fibre in your fruit and veg, plenty of water to swell the fibre and keep it moving through the gut and regular exercise to stimulate the muscle contractions of the bowel wall.

I'm wondering if there is a very simple answer. You may have cut down on the volume of food that you are eating and therefore just don't need to poo quite so often! I wouldn't be surprised if things didn?t slowly return to normal, over the next few weeks, and it is just your body adapting to a change in diet.

One way to speed things up is to increase the amount of wholegrains in your diet. By that I mean wholemeal bread, wholewheat pasta and brown rice. I have found that brown rice is particularly effective with my clients! You don't have to eat loads and, in fact, little and often seems to work best, so you could have some cold brown rice with a salad at lunch and eat some hot with your evening meal. Another good food is oats, as they contain soluble fibre, so you could consider having oats for your breakfast if you don?t already do this.

I wouldn't be too concerned about this change at the moment. If things don't improve and it starts to worry you, or gets worse, then I suggest you go and have a word with either your local pharmacist or doctor.
