Which fruits and veg are acidic?

Hello there. I have I.B.S. and cope with it well. I know the type of food and 'stress' that effects and accelerates it. I also have gastritis..recently tho I have noticed that this inflammation has got worse. I have always eaten lots of fruit and vegetables. These seem to be making tings worse. Can you help? Could you advise me which veg and fruit are more acidic than others...I know citrus is very acidic but are apples plums kiwi etc..

Hi,

You are right in that citrus fruits are some of the most acidic fruits you can eat.  If you think this is a contributing factor to your IBS, you should avoid fruits such as oranges, lemons, limes and grapefruits.    Pineapples are also quite acidic, as are any sour fruits such as sour plums.

There are plenty of low-acidic fruits that you can enjoy though……here are a few to tempt your taste-buds: apricots, blueberries, nectarines, blackberries, mangos, fresh figs, sweet apples, cherries and bananas.

Overall, the concentration of acid is lower in vegetables than it is in fruits, so you should be able to eat most vegetables without a problem. Tomatoes* are the most acidic vegetable, which you may need to take care with.  But the majority of vegetables fall within the low acid range, with potatoes, peas and corn considered the least acidic of all vegetables.

You should still aim to eat a high fibre diet, alongside plenty of liquids, as this has been shown to be helpful with IBS.  I hope this helps and your symptoms improve soon.

*techically classed as 'fruit', but we'll include here in the context of veggies as mostly eaten as such
