Which curries are lowest in calories and fat?

Hi, I am going for a friend's meal tonight and unfortunately it is a curry. Can you please advise me on what curry is lowest in calories and fat? Thanks

Curries are notoriously high in calories and fat, but they do vary quite widely and it is possible to choose healthier options to minimise the damage!

As most of the fat and calories are generally in the curry sauce, curried meat without a sauce, such as chicken tikka, is the most slimming option. Of course, if your curry arrives in a sauce, the other option is to leave most of the sauce on the side or serve yourself less. A tomato based sauce will be less calorific than a cream based sauce, so dishes based on korma sauces, or chicken tikka masala, are best avoided or substituted for a tomato and onion based sauce, such as a rogan josh. Portion control and restraint are other factors that are important in keeping calories and fat at a sensible level!

Vegetable curries also contain fewer calories than a meat or fish curry. If you don?t want an entirely vegetarian curry, a good compromise would be to reduce the amount of meat and replace this with vegetables. Choose less starchy vegetables, such as peppers and green beans, which add some vibrant colour to the curry as well as taste and valuable nutrients.

And finally, beware of the innocent looking accompaniments to any curry! A naan bread, or serving of pilau rice, can add around 400 calories and 10-12g of fat to your meal and can easily undo all the good work done by selecting the best type of curry.

If you bear all of these things in mind, you should still be able to have a curry without blowing your targets for the day. Enjoy!
