Q.

What is the correct amount of carbohydrates to eat a day?

Hello. For the past 3 weeks I have been concentrating mainly on my calorie intake which is 1400 calories a day (i.e. sometimes not too careful on eating enough vegetables etc.). I haven't been able to lose any weight during those weeks even though I am doing my daily necessary exercises (avg. 270 cal). Upon checking my diary, I realise that the problem may be the amount of carbohydrates intake. I like Tesco's light choices range and tend to eat one meal on a daily basis. But most light choices are pasta or rice dishes. That is why I feel like I am probably consuming more carbohydrates than I should be. My question is what would be the correct amount of carbohydrates to eat in one day for a 1400 cal diet? Thank you very much

A.

Our expert says...

Hello,

Thank you for your question.

The healthy recommendation if that around 30-35% of our calories should come from fat (mainly good unsaturated fat, not saturated fat or trans-fats), approximately 15% of our calories from protein and 50-55% from carbohydrate (ideally complex, brown carbohydrates).

As you are aiming for 1400 calories a day, this means that approximately half your calories should be from carbohydrates i.e. 700 calories a day.  As carbohydrate contains 4 calories per gram, this equates to around 175g of carbohydrates in one day.

Hopefully this will help you to adjust and rebalance your diet, if necessary.  Good luck!
