Our expert says...

Gallstones, as I'm sure you have been told, are accumulations of calcium or cholesterol in the duct running from the liver to the gallbladder, which stores bile used for digesting fats. It is not an excess of calcium or cholesterol in the diet that are to blame, but rather how these substances are dealt with in the body. However, optimising your nutrition and losing weight can certainly help.

It is best to eat low fat which your food diary and fat target will help you to do. I would advise that you treat your fat target as a maximum limit - aim to eat around two-thirds of this most days. Avoid too many saturated fats (these are the hard fats found in cheese and butter, fatty meat products and palm / coconut oils), but make sure you eat your essential fats - in nuts, seeds and vegetable oils - as the body cannot make these. Make sure your diet is high in fruits and vegetables ricj in soluble fibre as this reduces cholesterol absorption.

Also be aware that coffee, and other stimulants, can cause the gallbladder to contract and this may aggravate your symptoms. And make sure you drink 6-8 glasses of water a day to maintain the water content of your bile.

There is no problem in eating low fat dairy products like low fat yogurts and skimmed or semi-skimmed milk. Your doctor will have been referring to full fat dairy products, and suggesting you avoid these, which is sensible advice.

Losing weight in itself will probably also reduce gallstone symptoms. So, keep going and good luck!
