Our expert says...

Hi.

You don't say if your bloating is something new that you are experiencing or if it has been a problem for a while. Either way, a good starting point would be to make a note on the My Diary Notes section of your food diary when you feel bloated and then see if you can link it to certain foods or situations, such as stressful conditions.

For example, your bloating may be due to the fact that you are eating a lot more fruit and veg or you may have recently started eating beans and pulses. Sometimes our bodies need time to get used to a change in diet and by slowly implementing any changes you can avoid any temporary side effects which may occur, such as bloating.

In general to help prevent bloating, I recommend avoiding fizzy drinks, eating slowly, eating regularly, chewing thoroughly and trying to eat in a relaxed manner.

If you can't link your bloating to specific foods, I would encourage you to take your diet back to basics. Make sure each meal contains some lean protein and complex carbohydrates and have some good fats each day, in the form of nuts, seeds, oily fish or olive oil.

This healthy diet should also benefit your tender, swollen breasts. When you are experiencing this, I would avoid foods and drinks containing caffeine, as this has been shown to make these symptoms worse. A lot of women find supplementing with Omega 6 oil in the form of evening primrose, borage or starflower oil alleviates a lot of these symptoms. You may need to take this supplement for about 3 months for it to be effective, so don't judge it too early.

I hope this helps.
