Q.

What are lower calorie alternatives to cow's milk products?

I am unable to have wheat that often and can never have Cows milk. One thing I've found is that ranges such as "Free From" seem to very high in fat. Because of this I have gained a lot of weight. Are there any other foods that can replace these that aren't so high in fat? Also, are there any foods I should eat to make sure I am having all the calcium I need?

Hi,

I know that it can be difficult finding suitable foods when you are trying to lose weight and cannot eat certain things. I agree with you that, often, the special diet foods that are aimed at people like yourself are quite unhealthy and can be high in fat, sugar and calories.

It is difficult to recommend specific foods for you to try as alternatives, as I don?t know which foods you like to eat and wish to replace. However, I can recommend some websites that you may find useful to look at to give you some ideas for healthier options:

www.goodnessdirect.co.uk

www.wheatanddairyfree.com/index.htm

www.gffdirect.co.uk (gluten free foods direct)

I can also recommend some good cook books too (if you like cooking of course!):

1. Healthy Dairy-free Eating by Mini C and Tanya Carr

2. Cooking Without by Barbara Cousins

She also has two other books: Vegetarian Cooking Without and Cooking Without Made Easy. These are delicious recipes free from wheat, gluten, sugar, dairy, yeast, salt and saturated fat.

To ensure you get enough calcium in your overall diet, make sure you incorporate plenty of the following foods: leafy green vegetables, such as spinach; small boned fish, such as whitebait, sardines, prawns, shrimps, pilchards and salmon; fortified soya milk; dried fruits e.g. figs; sesame seeds and tahini; almonds; tofu; black beans; and pinto beans. These are all good sources of calcium and should keep you strong and healthy!
